North Richland Hills
1953: JONES DAIRY FARM | NRH FOUNDED
In 1952, Dairy Farmer Clarence Jones undertook a new endeavor. He began subdividing his 268-acre farm, in the area that is now Cummings Drive, for residential use. The first section consisted of 188 brick and masonry homes and the streets were named for local families. He called it North Richland Hills. In 1953 when the population had grown to 500, the North Richland Hills Civic League sought annexation to Richland Hills. Denied annexation, they voted to incorporate as the City of North Richland Hills instead. A second section was begun in 1954 and the streets named for automobiles. North Richland Hills now reached to within 2 miles of Smithfield, the area you now stand in. In a bitterly contested vote, Smithfield was annexed and became part of North Richland Hills in 1960. The population of North Richland Hills was 8,662 in 1960 and increased steadily as shown by each census conducted every 10 years; 16,514, 30,592, 45,895, 55,635, 63,343 and 70,638 in 2020.
In 2006 rated by the best possible blend of good jobs, low crime, quality schools, plenty of open space, reasonable home prices and lots to do, North Richland Hills was voted as one of the 100 best places to live in the U.S. by "Money Magazine". There are over 800 acres of parkland for hiking, biking, playing and more (see TODAY panel). Family Friendly attractions include NRH2O Family Water Park (see 1995 panel), Iron Horse Golf Course, NYTEX Sports Centre (Texas Brahmas Hockey Team) and an award winning Art in Public Spaces program that includes Smithfield depot.
